Music For Children

Vancouver Conservatory of Music offers a comprehensive range of early-childhood and beginner programs designed to cultivate a lifelong love of music. Through engaging, age-appropriate instruction, our young students develop rhythmic awareness, coordination, and creative expression while building the essential foundations for future musical study in a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Piano Kids

Pianokids 1

At the end of this course, children will be playing simple pieces in white keys in A minor and C major scales. Level 1 teaches children foundational musical concepts including time values, pitches, rhythmic precision, notation, and dynamics, while encouraging the development of proper finger, arm, and body positions.

Pianokids 2

Building on the concepts explored in Level 1, Level 2 aims to enhance students’ confidence and improve their technique. Students receive instruction in the fundamentals of piano play and study score reading, proper pedal use, phrasing, and other concepts and techniques.

The repertoire is drawn from a variety of styles, from highly lyrical works to rhythmic pieces. Homework is assigned each week, with parents tracking their child’s progress.

Prerequisite: Pianokids 1, or permission of the instructor.

Pianokids 3

Level 3 studies deepen the link between theory and practice by further developing students’ awareness of expression, contrast, and tone.

Prerequisite: Pianokids 2, or permission of the instructor.

The virtues of practice, discipline, posture, and technique are conveyed in a fun, upbeat environment. The repertoire is drawn from a variety of styles, from highly lyrical works to rhythmic pieces. Homework is assigned each week, with parents tracking their child’s progress.

Prerequisite: Violinkids 1, or permission of the instructor.

Violinkids 3

Level 3 studies deepen the link between theory and practice by further developing students’ awareness of expression, contrast, and tone. Particular attention is paid to basic musicianship and body awareness, including techniques for expressing tone through the use of arm and wrist.

Prerequisite: Violinkids 2, or permission of the instructor.

Also, the course helps your child to empower her/his memory by memorizing more and more songs through repetition with their teacher using nursery rhythms. Enhancing your child’s hand-eye coordination ability, which is the golden key to the world of music, is another crucial aspect of the course.

Sunshine II, ages 3-5 (Preschoolers), 60 min

Sunshine II offers an active, hands-on approach to music to enhance your child’s hand-eye coordination ability to build a strong foundation for their performance ability in the future.

Also, singing, dancing, playing, and teamwork music activities are the main body of Sunshine II.

Preliminary Piano Program

Orff Schulwerk Program

VCM Orff program is designed for children aged 4 to 7 to shape their musical foundation. In this program, students learn musical skills through imitation, exploration, improvisation, and composition.

Children understand the concept of rhythm, time values, music notation and terminology, basic improvisation, and composition.

In the VCM Orff program, children spend thirty minutes on improving their musicianship skills, thirty minutes on the piano basics, thirty minutes on the xylophone, and thirty minutes on the recorder.

In addition, our instructors prepare children to perform at the annual VCM Music Festival.
